The world is full of precious and valuable stones, and of those, diamonds are among the most desirable. It is interesting to look at a sparkling diamond masterpiece and think about how that diamond came to be. Diamonds don’t start out as diamonds. They start out as simple carbon, a natural element found in all living things. That carbon endures significant pressure and heat deep inside the earth, which creates a diamond. Now formed, diamonds are often hidden in rock, waiting to be found, to be refined, and to be used.
In order to be used, a master craftsman cuts and polishes the diamonds, shaping them with precision depending on how each diamond is to be used. Because not all diamonds end up in sparkling jewelry. Some are used in medicine, in audio equipment, for polishing, for drilling, for cutting – even cutting and polishing other diamonds. The master craftsman cuts each diamond into a masterpiece, exactly in the way that it is needed for the diamond’s intended use, with its own beauty and value.
In the same way, the Bible says that we are God’s masterpiece, his work of art (Ephesians 2:10). Like the process of creating diamonds, God knows the treasures we are. He uses the pain and hardships, the difficult things in our lives to create something that is both beautiful and useful. No part of our lives is wasted, painful or pleasant, good or bad. Using it all, He creates a work of art in our lives, a work of art with a purpose that He uses for His glory.
